OpenAI launches GPT-6 Astra: the new model builds documents and spreadsheets from your own template

What happened: On September 3, 2026, OpenAI launched its new flagship model, GPT-6 Astra, which the company says is roughly twice as fast at computer use as its predecessor and handles more demanding multi-step work — OpenAI positions it as built for coding, research, computer use, and complex, multi-step tasks. The part that matters for everyday office work: Astra can build a document, spreadsheet, or presentation that follows your own template and instructions — and if you change your requirements partway through, it can adapt without starting over. The rollout is staggered: Pro, Business, and Enterprise users get it first through ChatGPT Work and Codex, while Plus only has access through Work mode, not regular chat yet. Broader availability is expected to follow in the coming days; the model is also reachable through the OpenAI API, Microsoft Azure, and AWS Bedrock, which mainly matters if your company wires AI into its own tools.

In practice that means less spoon-feeding it small steps and more handing over the whole task at once, with the model tracking down and assembling the source material itself.

How to get started:

1. Check your plan — Astra is currently limited to paid ChatGPT plans (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise); it isn't on the free tier.
2. In ChatGPT, switch to Work mode — for Plus, that's currently the only way to reach Astra.
3. Pick GPT-6 Astra from the model list and give it the task along with a link to your template or source data.
4. Write the brief as if for a colleague doing the task for the first time — the more specifically you describe the template, tone, and structure you want, the less manual polishing the result will need.

Watch out for: Availability is uneven right now — if you don't see the model in the picker, it just hasn't reached your account yet, not a bug. For documents Astra builds from templates and company data, the rule "AI proposes, the human approves" applies doubly: always review the output before sending it to a client or your manager, and don't feed in sensitive client or internal data unless your company's rules allow it.
