ChatGPT can now listen and work: voice connects to plugins and to Work

What happened: On September 23, 2026, OpenAI expanded ChatGPT's voice mode (Live) with plugin and connected-app support — during a voice conversation you can now reach for email, calendar or Slack, and follow the written replies live in the chat. At the same time, voice arrived in ChatGPT Work, the agentic mode for working with documents and tools: on the web and in the mobile app you can now dictate a task — have the AI write a document, spreadsheet or presentation, or send an email — and if the task runs longer than the call itself, it continues in the regular text interface. Voice mode also switches between the new GPT-6 models (Astra, Sol and Luna) depending on how demanding the conversation is. Live still can't share video or a screen, and it can't reach into your ChatGPT Library on its own — those files still need to be added to the conversation manually. How much of this you get depends on your plan: the free account and lower paid tiers get voice with plugins only within a limited daily allowance, while voice access to Work is currently tied to higher paid tiers and business accounts.

What it means for you: Dictation stops being just a stand-in for typing and becomes a way to actually kick off work on the go or between meetings:

• Running your agenda on the move — “check tomorrow's calendar and move the client meeting to the afternoon”
• Quick reply on Slack — “summarize what happened in the project channel and draft a reply to my colleague”
• Starting a document by voice — you dictate the brief and structure, ChatGPT Work drafts the document or spreadsheet, and you polish it afterwards on the keyboard

For ordinary messaging or brainstorming, nothing fundamental changes — the point is that voice now reaches places that used to require text. It's especially handy when your hands or a screen aren't free — in the car, between meetings in the hallway, or on a walk, situations where a task used to just get pushed to later.

How to start today:

1. Open ChatGPT on mobile or the web and start voice mode.
2. In your account settings, check which plugins and connected apps are active (email, calendar, Slack and others) — voice uses the same ones as text chat.
3. For longer tasks (documents, spreadsheets, presentations), switch to Work and try dictating the brief instead of typing it.
4. An unfinished task from a voice call can be found and completed in ChatGPT's regular text window.

Watch out for: Voice can also trigger an action that sends or changes something — before you confirm a dictated instruction, listen to (or read) the summary of what the AI is about to do, especially for emails and messages that leave your head and go straight out of the company. The “AI proposes, the human approves” principle applies doubly here — voice doesn't replace an eyes-on check for sensitive steps.
