Google Sheets can turn a spreadsheet into an interactive app – no code needed

The new Sheets canvas feature turns your spreadsheet into an interactive tool – a task board with draggable cards, a dashboard, or a form – just from a plain-language description. The data stays in sync with the original sheet.

What happened: Google has launched Sheets canvas in Sheets – a Gemini-powered layer that can turn an ordinary spreadsheet into an interactive, two-way-linked "mini app" on request. In the Gemini side panel you simply describe what you want – say, "turn this into a task overview with cards grouped by status" – and Gemini designs a visual interface directly on top of your data, with no formulas or code required. The feature started rolling out on August 13, 2026 for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers and for Business and Enterprise Standard/Plus plans; Rapid Release domains got it as early as August 10.

Google's own examples give a sense of the range: a study planner with assignment due dates, a fantasy football dashboard for comparing players, or a wedding seating chart where you move guests by dragging them between tables. What they have in common is that the visual layer is just another view of the same data – not a copy, not an export.

What it means for you: Sheets has always been mainly for entering and calculating data – visuals and interaction meant either manual work or a separate tool. Canvas flips that: you get a canvas that behaves like an app, while underneath it stays a plain sheet.

  • Team task tracking – ask for a kanban board with cards by status; dragging a card to another column writes the new value straight back into the sheet.
  • A quick dashboard for a meeting – generate a filterable overview from a sales sheet without building a pivot table yourself.
  • A shared form or schedule – a shift roster or an event seating plan colleagues can click and drag directly, with the result visible in the original sheet.

Changes made in the canvas sync to the source sheet instantly, and vice versa – it behaves like a live mirror of the data, not a one-off export.

How to get started:

  1. Open a spreadsheet in Google Sheets and click the Gemini icon in the side panel.
  2. Choose "Create canvas" and describe in plain language what you want to see or how you want to work with the data.
  3. Gemini proposes an interface; you refine the layout, labels, and behavior with further prompts in the chat.
  4. Share the finished canvas the same way you'd share a regular spreadsheet – permissions are inherited from the source file.

Watch out for: The feature currently only works in the web interface and in English, and there are per-user limits on how many canvases you can create and edit. Business accounts may need "smart features" enabled in the Workspace admin console – if you don't see canvas, check with IT. And as with any tool where AI designs an interface on top of real data: before sharing a canvas with the whole team, check whether the visualization surfaces more than it should – permissions are inherited from the original sheet, but what's visible at a glance can differ from what was tucked away in the raw data. And because Gemini reads the whole sheet's content to build the canvas, don't feed it spreadsheets with salaries, customer personal data, or internal figures without company approval – strip or anonymize sensitive columns first.
