Google Slides can now record your presentation as a video – without leaving the editor

A new Record option in Google Slides uses Google Vids to capture a voiced walkthrough of your slides. The result is a finished video with a shareable link and a transcript you can edit afterwards.

What happened: Starting August 20, 2026, Google is gradually rolling out a new Record option in the right-hand menu of Google Slides. Clicking it walks you through recording your presentation using Google Vids – you narrate the slides, the system automatically generates a transcript of your speech, and the recording becomes a finished video with a shareable link. The transcript can then be edited like ordinary text, including regenerating a missing section with an AI voice, so you don't have to re-record the whole presentation. The feature is available to all Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and regular personal Google accounts. Rapid Release domains see it gradually starting August 20; Scheduled Release domains get it from September 7. Anyone still using the older Slides recording will find it under View as "Slides Recording" – both options run side by side.

What it means for you: Until now, recording a narrated presentation meant either starting a video call with yourself or switching to the separate Vids app and rebuilding the presentation there by hand. Now you can just stay in Slides:

  • An async update for your team or client – instead of scheduling a meeting, record a five-minute video walking through the quarterly numbers and send the link so everyone can watch it whenever suits them.
  • Training and onboarding – turn an existing presentation for new colleagues into a narrated video in minutes, without moving it into another tool.
  • Fixing just one passage – if you misspeak or a number changes, edit the corresponding sentence in the transcript and let AI regenerate only that snippet of voice.

It's a continuation of a pattern we keep seeing across AI tools: the craft work – editing, generating a missing voice clip – gets handed to AI, so you can focus on the content instead of the mechanics of recording.

How to get started:

  1. Open a presentation in Google Slides and choose Record from the right-hand menu.
  2. Go through the slides and record your commentary – the interface walks you through the whole process step by step.
  3. Once done, edit the transcript if you need to rephrase or correct anything.
  4. Share the resulting video link the same way you'd share a link to a document.

Watch out for: The finished video gets a shareable link, so before sending it around, check the sharing settings and make sure your narration or slides don't contain sensitive information – salaries, non-public figures, colleagues' or clients' personal data – that shouldn't leave a narrow circle of people. The feature currently requires no admin action, but if your company manages Workspace settings centrally, availability may vary by domain and release track.
