Todoist now connects to ChatGPT: manage your tasks by conversation

Todoist's official MCP server lets ChatGPT read, create and edit your tasks and projects. A weekly review or an inbox triage becomes a single conversation.

What happened: Todoist has launched an official MCP server (Model Context Protocol) — an open standard through which AI assistants access your data securely. Once connected, ChatGPT can read your tasks and projects, create new ones and edit existing ones (rename, reschedule, move) inside your Todoist. It works on the Beginner, Pro and Business plans.

What it means for you: Things that used to mean ten minutes of clicking now take one conversation:

  • Inbox triage — “go through my inbox and suggest which items are quick wins for today”
  • Weekly review — “what didn't I finish this week? reschedule it sensibly into next week”
  • Brain dump → plan — you dictate a messy stream of thoughts and the AI turns it into clean tasks with sections and due dates

This is exactly the shift we write about in the guide: AI is no longer just a typewriter — it's starting to operate your tools.

How to try it today:

  1. In ChatGPT, enable Developer mode (beta): Settings → Plugins (in newer versions of ChatGPT the section is called Apps, or Connectors) → Advanced Settings.
  2. In the same section, add a custom plugin/app with the URL https://ai.todoist.net/mcp.
  3. Sign in to Todoist and approve the permissions.

Careful: the connection can write, too — keep changes in approval mode in ChatGPT so the AI doesn't reschedule your life without asking. You can disconnect at any time from either side.
